Offroad Runner Cap

There is a kind of run with no stopwatch and no bib number. Leaves the house early, crosses the neighborhood, picks up the trail where the pavement ends and comes back before the sun is fully up. This cap was designed for that kind of outing.

Body in lightweight quick drying nylon, with two side panels of perforated mesh that let heat out the sides of the head, which is where it builds up. The brim is curved and medium length, meant to block the sun without turning into a wind catcher when you pick up the pace.

On the front, embroidered in white, a mountain range over the word OFFROAD. It is the only graphic on the piece and it needs no other.

The mesh that lets heat out

The holes are large and visible, in a leaf pattern on both sides. A closed cap turns into a greenhouse ten minutes into a run. This one solves it by design, without relying on miracle fabric.

Buckle adjuster, not hook and loop

The back closes with a strap and a plastic snap buckle. Hook and loop catches long hair and loosens with sweat. A buckle locks and stays locked. The adjustment runs freely between 21.7 and 23.6 in (55 to 60 cm) of head circumference.

Where it lives

Good for road running, for trail and for an ordinary hot day. It pairs directly with the Latitude UPF 50+ Quick Dry Shirt, which is in the same register: light, dries fast and goes out the door without a second thought.

Two things to know first

• The crown is tall and the cut is roomy. Smaller heads, near 21.7 in (55 cm), will need to pull the strap tight, and then there is extra fabric in the crown. If you like a cap that hugs the skull, this is not it.
• The brim is medium, not wide. It shades the face, not the neck or the ears. For full coverage, the Lookout Washed Cotton Bucket Hat does it better.

Care

• Hand wash cold with mild soap. Scrub only the inside sweatband, which is where the sweat sits.
• No washing machine and no dryer. Heat warps the brim permanently.
• Dry in the shade, resting crown up, so the brim does not flatten.
• No fabric softener, which closes the mesh holes.
