Trail Wide Brim Hat

A fisherman's hat is what you wear when the sun gives no quarter and there is no shade: on the boat, on an open trail, in the field. A cap protects the face and lets the ears and the back of the neck burn; the ordinary bucket covers the ears and stops there. This one goes all the way: a wide brim around the whole head and a neck flap that comes down to the collar.

The Trail hat is made of a lightweight synthetic fabric, the kind that dries in minutes after a dip or a sweat, and weighs almost nothing on the head. Two mesh vents on the sides of the crown let the heat out; a chin cord with a toggle holds it in the wind and on the motorcycle.

The neck flap comes off

The flap snaps to the back of the crown. With it, the hat is a strong sun piece: fishing, hours of hiking, open air work. Without it, it becomes an ordinary wide brim hat, for the city and the road. Both modes are in the photos, and the swap takes ten seconds.

In the details

A small label sewn on the front, a mesh vent hidden under the crown, the snap for the flap and the toggle of the chin cord. The cord runs inside the crown and comes out on both sides, so you can tighten it under the chin or let it hang at the back.

One size, four colors

One size, 22 to 22.8 in (56 to 58 cm), with the cord doing the fine adjustment. Measure around your head just above the ears, across the middle of the forehead. All four colors are deep and matte, so they draw no attention on the boat or on the street.
